Review|Sound of Design 當聽覺也加入了設計的展演:2016 聽見設計展

In early September, I bumped into the information of Sound of Design. I was fascinated by its concept of “auditory as a way of design” and “break the boundary of visual dominance.” I bought the ticket, anticipating what kind of inspiration it would bring me.

At the first day of the exhibition, I arrived very early as it was just opened. Although there were indeed some flaws during my visit, the overall experience was still good and inspiring.

 

九月初恰巧看到了聽見設計展的展覽消息,對於展覽主打的「聽覺也是設計的一部份」、「突破設計高度視覺化的企圖」相當感興趣,於是早早訂了票,期待著這場展覽將會帶來的刺激與靈感。

開展第一天一早就去了。儘管展場人手看似不太足,場地與販售部未見工作人員嚴格把關驗票、販售部當天標價牌還正在貼、這幾天也才看到參展品牌陸續放上文字說明的消息(這不是叫我再去一次嗎lol),然而瑕不掩瑜,整體觀展經驗仍然相當舒適且有啟發性。

 

Just at the entrance of the exhibition room, three simple devices enables you to hear your ticket! How fun is that! The sounds are engendered by the holes on the paper tickets. There are also some scientific introductions about different acoustic waves. With the interactive installations, the seemly boring science knowledge becomes vivid and interesting.

When you walk in, you’ll see the displays of popular Taiwan designs, like the clock and watch made of concrete by 22 Design Studio, the cup mimicking the surface of fruits by Hey Sheng Chi Si, the leather bag by Rawpiece, and etc. All of these products possess their own sounds, not only the sounds made by the items themselves, but also the sounds created by designers based on the feelings these products bring to people. In some extent, it seems the sounds are so subjective since they are made by the sound designers. However, doesn’t it still express something common that all the people will experience when they see these items?

The exhibition of Sound of Design has five main topics. Each of the topics is represented by a lifestyle brand in Taiwan. Through their collaboration, interesting experience occurs and the definition of design is broadened.

 

一進展場,就有三個如同音樂盒搖桿的簡單設置,能聽見票券的聲音。利用紙張的打洞來發出不同的音響效果實在有趣。而後,就是較為科普的說明,言簡意賅介紹了正弦波、方波與三角波,互動裝置也讓這些國中理化課本裡生硬的知識,突然變得生動起來。

往裡一些,擺放著當下台灣火紅的生活設計,包括22 Design Studio的水泥時鐘與手錶、黑生起司的果皮杯、Rawpiecw 的皮革包等等,各自有著不同的聲音。這些聲音是音效設計個人對於這些物品、這些設計的個人觀感,但何嘗不也反映了某些普遍共感的聽覺感受?

這次的展覽以奇幻異想、優雅時尚、手感品味、北歐極簡以及復古浪漫五個主題為核心,分別與當代台灣有趣的品牌合作,攜手打造讓人能拓寬感官觸受與狹義設計定義的展場體驗。

 

奇幻異想:Eye Candle

What do you think of this product? Just a pure decoration? Nah, it’s a scent candle! Can you believe that? The goldfish is so vivid and the candle shows such transparency that I can hardly believe it is really a candle. The smell of berries and bay leafs and the look of a goldfish living in the water has already showed creativity. With the sounds in the background, I am absorbed in the atmosphere.

 

Eye Candle 這栩栩如生的蘭壽金魚,若沒有額外說明,很難將它和香氛蠟燭聯想在一起吧!野莓與月桂葉的香氣、逼真的金魚造型與幾近透明如水的蠟,嗅覺與視覺這兩者的結合本就已是極高的感官饗宴,再加上融合於背景的聲響,嗅覺、視覺、聽覺三者的配合,緩緩將觀者的感官打開,不再只透過眼睛,也利用耳朵與鼻子去體會,讓人經過這場洗禮,彷彿對一種理想的生活風格有了更高一層的認識。

優雅時尚:#nude

#nude has always been one of my favorite boutiques in Taipei. You can see elegance and effortlessness in its simplicity and pureness. “Walk-in Closet” is the topic of #nude’s display. It can be an ideal dressing room, and can also be an ideal lifestyle. When you go back to your room, it is the place where you can unveil your mask; it is the time when you are able to ponder about life, about goals and about directions.

The curation of #nude’s “Walk-in Closet” inspires me a lot in room decorations (so I took so many photos there!). It is similar to the kind of minimalistic rooms I adore on Youtube videos. This space stays clean, simple and of course comfortable, where I know I can absolutely relax and recharge myself.

 

#nude 一直以來都是我很喜歡的品牌,在裸色中展現優雅,在簡約裡透露從容。高質感的布料與專注細節的剪裁讓簡單的設計更能呈顯穿者的個性。#nude 將此次展覽命名為 Walk-in Closet,走進一個理想的衣帽間,或是走進一個理想的生活。回到房間,褪去武裝的色彩,找回最純淨的自己,將自己沉澱,時尚並不僅只意味著外在的裝扮,更在於內裡的平靜,在於生活細節裡品味的堆疊。靜下來,才能聽見往往被忽略的細微聲響,才能耳聞生活的腳步。

#nude 的展場佈置儼然是一個理想房間的樣貌。細細拍了許多照片,或許可以當成未來房間佈置的參考。 這是個乾淨、簡單、舒服的空間,讓人能卸下壓力與戒備,或許這個時候才能好好思考自己生活的目標與方向。

手感品味:Wolf Tea

In the whole exhibition, I love Wolf Tea’s curation the most. The draperies of the linen clothes create a mystical vibe, pure and slow, as if I just walked into some kind of Japanese tea house. The introduction glued on the wall pushes me to read about the types, specialties and roasting ways of the teas; meanwhile, I can just open the jars and smell them. Most of all, sounds depicting the characteristics of the teas floats from the headphones. I experience the teas in visual, olfactory and auditory ways at the same time.

 

整場聽見設計展中,我特別喜歡琅茶的佈展。垂墜的棉麻布帶來一種神秘感,也彷彿人們對於日本茶道純淨、緩慢的想像。琅茶以文字說明介紹了茶葉的產地、屬性、烘培方式,以及佈展人對於茶葉的感受,同時觀者還可以隨時打開茶罐來嗅聞,再加上音效設計針對不同茶種聲音的運用,就只差品茶(現場其實有販售限量的冷泡茶),視覺、嗅覺、聽覺、味覺等感官就全被滿足了。雖然少了味覺,不過整體來說仍舊是相當完整的感受歷程。

不同的茶種有不同的聲音,而每一副耳機所傳出的聲響無疑都十分悅耳,且合於我對紅茶、烏龍茶、綠茶等想像。琅茶想把台灣茶之美傳遞給全世界,堅持在適恰的時節、氣候在優質茶園中採摘茶葉,不混茶的單品茶才能保留茶葉純粹的美好。

北歐極簡:Design Butik

Through the Scandinavian minimalistic design, Design Butik shares the details and little inspirations underlying our quotidian lives. No matter our lifestyle is elegant, wild, extravagant, or easy-going, every choice we make gradually shapes the texture of it.

 

Design Butik 藉由北歐簡約的設計,分享平凡生活中的不平凡以及堅持細節的感動。在名為生活的場域中,無論風格是華麗、是狂野、是簡約、是夢幻還是率性,每一件生活小物的選擇,都逐漸堆疊出屬於自己的生活質感。

復古浪漫:Sense 30

Sense 30 is a brand providing dandy-like retro style handmade bicycles. They hope to represent the delicacy of traditional craftsmanship, making riding bikes part of the attitude towards life. In Sound of Design, Sense 30 seems to move its whole studio here, only in a small version. You can see similar displays of their studio and all kinds of repairing gadgets. When you roll the wheel, you’ll then hear the clicking sounds of metals and see the bicycle details as if you were actually in a bike producing environment.

 

Sense 30 是個提供復古優雅紳士定製單車的品牌。他們希望透過老師傅手工的製作,重新呈現古老工藝的細膩,並讓單車成為一種生活態度。展場間,是 Sense 30 縮小版的工作室樣貌。這裡,可以看見與總店工作室如出一轍的店面陳列、修繕腳踏車的道具,轉動互動裝置的車輪,則會聽見機械喀搭喀搭作響的聲音並出現單車畫面,讓觀者彷彿真處於單車製作當下的真實情境裡。

After appreciating the main topics of the exhibition, you’ll then see some interesting installations, such as four sets of audio creations trying to reverse the concept just exhibited. Rather than transforming visual experiences into audio ones, it shows that audio experiences can also be turned into visual displays. The space is designed and decorated based on the auditory feelings. In addition to these, there are fortune cards and displays of audio devices as well, like records, walkman, mp3 and iPod. Not only are they interesting, but they are also abundant in sound knowledge.

 

主展覽之後,還有許多有趣的互動裝置,像是反轉聽見設計的四組音效創作,試圖將聽覺經驗轉化為視覺感受,由聽覺決定空間的佈置呈現,逆向操作了前面我們才剛參觀過的,將視覺、嗅覺等感受轉化為聽覺的佈展。此外,還有籤詩卡的抽取,以及按照時間序列擺放的聲音媒介,像是黑膠唱片、隨身聽、iPod等,到當今的線上串流音樂,富趣味同時也傳達了關於聲響、音樂的知識。

Briefly speaking, I like the exhibition of Sound of Design a lot; it can even be topped in my recent exhibition rating list. It broadens my understanding of what design is and how design should be. Design is not circumscribed to visual forms, but should be operates in other senses, like auditory, olfactory and gustatory. In fact, there shouldn’t be any boundaries in designs. All the senses should be merged in order to create a more profound work. All in all, Sound of Design does stimulate me to think further and deeper.

Only 10 days are left for the exhibition, so don’t hesitate and go take a look!

 

整體而言,我滿喜歡聽見設計展的呈現,也算是近期我最喜歡的一個展覽。它開拓了我對於「設計」的認知:其實各種感官都可以是設計的目標對象與取徑,若能善用五感,突破視覺獨大的框架,這樣的設計能帶來更多面、更寬闊的感受。而當天可能由於去得早,人還不多不會太擁擠,觀展氛圍舒適,同時大量的互動裝置也深化了我對「聽覺作為一種設計途徑」的理解。展期還有10天,把握機會親自走進設計的聲音中吧!

      啊真的有點可惜~
      不過倫敦有更多更棒的展覽,一定可以彌補這次的擦身而過;p
