I went on a weekend getaway in late January in Hualian. When in the city, I encountered this awesome cafe that I needed to share.

Yes, you’re right. This is the place, which still preserves the old laundry shop signboard. Before Giocare Coffee settles down here, it is indeed a laundry shop. The building is ancient, but after some constructions, it is a great place for a cup of coffee.

光看外觀，這個地方的確讓人疑惑，它究竟是「美琪乾洗商店」還是一間咖啡廳？沒錯，半寓咖啡的前身就是美琪乾洗商店。它保留了老建築的許多細節，並加上更多現代的元素，像是門口那成片的落地窗玻璃，或是歐美雜誌的收藏、日系陶器的擺放，讓半寓咖啡在新舊之間取得一個巧妙、幽微而讓人感到趣味、舒服的平衡。

Good vibes, good food and of course, good coffee.

I love the good vibes of Giocare Coffee a lot. Unlike other cafes that are also opened up in ancient buildings and thus, have dusts in the corner or on their decors, Giocare Coffee stays really clean, both in its environment and its decors. It keeps the ancient atmosphere, but not the shabby surroundings.

I adore the mix and match of the traditional Taiwanese architecture and modern western or Japanese decorations. It does strike an interesting balance between the old and the new. By the way, the owner of the shop keeps a super cute cat!

特別值得一提的是，半寓咖啡雖是老屋改建的咖啡廳，卻不因建築的老舊而在環境維護上有所怠惰。不管在台北還是嘉義，一些我曾造訪過的老屋咖啡廳在佈置上或是角落處往往積了一層灰。但半寓咖啡則不然。我們這次坐在樓梯下方角落的沙發區，旁邊就有許多老物擺設，而出乎我意料的，這些擺設一塵不染。整體而言，半寓咖啡相當乾淨。就算了多了一隻可愛的店貓也一樣。其實當天到達半寓時，只剩下這隻店貓睡覺的沙發區，把正在熟睡的牠叫醒我覺得相當抱歉。

The price is fair, and the food is brilliant in Giocare. For someone like my Mom, who doesn’t like lemon tart, complimented Giocare’s lemon tart greatly. The caramel apple tart is definitely yummy as well. It is crispy on the outside, and soft and juicy on the inside. The coffee is also of good quality, which tastes smooth and brings a feel of awakening.

半寓咖啡無論甜點還是飲品的價格都很公道，相較於臺北，可說相當便宜。我從來沒想過竟然只要100元，就能吃到這麼好吃的檸檬塔。連我那不愛檸檬塔的媽媽也讚不絕口。酸甜清爽的檸檬內餡，搭上酥脆有著奶油香氣的塔皮，再配上一杯濃郁的黑糖拿鐵，是寒流來襲的午後最大的享受；而焦糖蘋果塔則外酥內軟，蘋果烤得恰到好處，保留了水果本身的水分，也帶出了蘋果的香氣。

My Mom did enjoy herself reading magazines in the sofa in the corner. As a coffee and magazine lover, She likes Giocare Coffee a lot. She also bought some coffee beans home. As for my baby brother, a foodie and sweet tooth, he similarly loves this place for its good desserts and drinks. I’m so satisfied they love here. I’ve done my job pretty well I guess 😉

愛喝咖啡不愛甜點的媽媽對咖啡和塔類都稱許不已，喝了店家招待的手沖單品後還帶了咖啡豆回家，而半寓的豐富雜誌收藏讓她一點也不無聊；愛吃甜點嘴又刁的弟弟也很滿意這個下午造訪半寓的行程。我很喜歡半寓整體的氛圍、清潔、佈置，食物美味不在話下，服務也相當好，還有一隻不怕生的可愛店貓。如果下次有機會再來訪花蓮，一定會再空出一個下午給半寓。
